Yunnan is the hometown of Chinese tobacco. Yunnan tobacco has been highly applauded for its golden color, fragrant aroma, mild effect and pure taste. Yunnan tobacco has been exported and applied as raw materials in 84 tobacco factories outside Yunnan in China.
Yunnan tobacco is a high quality tobacco quite popular among the cigarette smokers in China. In Yunnan, there are 16 tobacco brands, altogether 21 kinds of tobacco products, including Yunyan, Hongtashan, Ashima, Shilin, Gonghexinxi, Hongmei, and so on.
The flue-cured tobacco plantation covers an area of 5.222 million mu in the province, with a total output of 0.600,8 million tons ranking the first in the 12 provinces or autonomous regions of China’s western region. Currently, Yunnan has a production capacity of 8 million boxes of cigarette and 13 million dan of double smoked flue-cured tobacco leaves.
Tobacco is the biggest industry in Yunnan, accounting for 26.4% of Yunnan's gross industrial output in 2004. Furthermore, it is ranked the No.1 in China, accounting for 17.6% of the national total output. Yunnan's tobacco and cigarettes are famous in China - well known brands include "Hongtashan", "Ashima", "Yunyan" and "Hongmei",which all rank among the best in China. Yuxi is one of the most important tobacco production bases in China and the nation's largest cigarette manufacturer - Hongta Group is located in this city.
For years, Yunnan tobacco industries have played an important role in local economy and the national tobacco industry. They have maintained their first in the positions in the aspects of the number of famous brands, total output, sales volume, portion of market, foreign exchange earning, tariff and facilities and technology.

Honghe is famous in China for the tobacco that grows in the north, Named after the Honghe River, which flows throughout the area, Honghe Prefecture is located in the south of Yunnan bordering Vietnam. The population of just over 4.2 million has 9 ethnic minorities including the Hani, Yi, Miao, Dai, Zhuang, Yao, Hui, Lahu and Buyi. It is the main area in which Hani, Yi and Hui reside. The Honghe region is most famous for it's tobacco production and scenic rice terraces along the Yuanjiang River.
Wenshan sits just to the east of Honghe, bordering Vietnam to the south and the Chinese provinces of Guangxi to the east and Guizhou to the north. The administrative capital is Wenshan, a town once known as Kaihua. The population of 3.3 million is made up of 11 ethnic minorities including the Han, Zhuang, Miao and Yi. Wenshan's major cities are Funing, near the border to Guizhou, Guangnan, an old trading town, Qiubei, Malipo, Maguan, Xichou and Yanshan.
