Guangxi Beihai is rich in marine resources. It has a long history of dried seafood processing and seawater pearl farming. Beihai produces about 9,000 kg of pearls a year. About 6,000 households, or about 50,000 people, make their living from pearl farming. There are about 500 family-run pearl processing plants, employing about 600 skilled workers. Using the technique of pre-treating the beads before insertion, Beihai has successfully cultivated black, red, yellow, blue and green pearls in recent years.
Products are exported to Japan, Italy, the US, Switzerland and other countries and have won high acclaim from foreign buyers for their quality and low price. Some experts estimate that coloured pearls can increase the economic returns of Beihai's pearl farming industry by more than 80%.
