Onion is grown in more than 130 countries in the world,there are an estimated 6.7 million acres of onions in the world, Approximately 10 percent of this world onion production is traded internationally. Total world onion production in 2004 is 55,025,127 MT. Based on the average production from 2000-2004, the world’s top producer of onion is China, contributing an average of 31.43% to total production, followed by India (10.22%), USA (6.38%) and Turkey (3.83%), Pakistan (2.97), Russian Federation (2.84%), Islamic Republic of Iran (2.80%), Japan (2.35%), Brazil (2.22%), and Spain (1.95).

World onion production is estimated at approximately 105 billion pounds each year. The average annual onion consumption calculates to approximately 13.67 pounds of onions per person across the world. Libya has the highest consumption of onions with an astounding average per capita consumption of 66.8 pounds.

China has become the world's biggest exporter of Chinese green onion, ginger and garlic, with export volume topping 60,000 tons, 150,000 tons and 1.25 million tons in 2006, respectively accounting for 90 per cent, 68.2 per cent and 80 per cent of the world's total, China's planting area of Chinese green onion, ginger and garlic reached 540,000 hectares, 240,000 hectares and 770,000 hectares respectively in 2006, ...
