Laiwu is rich with the resources of agricultural produce and its by-products with 33000 hectares of plantation area, among which ginger and garlic were planted with the area of 2400 hectares. A lot of ginger and garlic are also planted in neighboring areas. Laiwu is named as the “land of ginger”, and  "Laiwu Ginger" has become Shangdong's third brand name approved as a State Product with Geographic Indication.

Laiwu's ginger growing dates back over 2,000 years. Its superior quality earned for it the titles of "China's Quality Product" and "A Quality Variety of Chinese Vegetables".

Laiwu's ginger and garlic are well know to the people of the world. By the end of 2007, Laiwu had a ginger plantation of 118,800 mu, which yielded 277,500 tons. Its ginger and garlic storage and processing companies numbered 242, and its ginger products were exported to more than 10 countries and regions, such as EU, the US, Russia and Japan, and have met with favourable reception owing to its good quality.
