Jinping-I Hydroelectric Project is located in the counties of Yanyuan and Muli, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Its large reservoir makes it a controlling project in the lower reach (from Kala to the estuary) of the main river. It’s 358 km from the river estuary.
Jinping-I dam controls a catchment area of 103,000km2 in its upstream, which is 75.4% of the total catchment area of the Yalong. At the dam site, the multi-year average inflow is 1,200m3/s, and the multi-year average annual runoff is 38.5 billion m3.
Jinping-I is huge in scale, and power generation is its main purpose. The project has a total installed capacity of 3,600MW (6 × 600MW), which gives an average output of 1,659MW in the dry season and a multi-year average annual generation of 16.62TWh.
The normal pool level of the reservoir is 1,880m, and the dead level is 1,800m. Its total storage capacity is 7.76 billion m3, and with a regulation storage of 4.91 billion m3, it is a reservoir of yearly regulation.
The project consists of permanent structures categorized as water retaining, spillway and dissipation, and power tunnels and powerhouse complex. Its 305m-high double curvature concrete arch dam is the world’s highest dam.
Total construction period of the project is 9 years and 3 months, and its total static investment is RMB19.68 billion yuan, while the total dynamic investment is RMB24.58 billion yuan.
